Almuñécar volverá a convertirse en capital del teatro clásico con la XVII edición del Festival de Teatro Grecolatino “Sexi Firmum Iulium”, que se celebrará del 4 al 7 de septiembre en el histórico entorno de la localidad. La programación reúne algunas de las producciones más destacadas de la temporada, con estrenos procedentes del Festival Internacional de Teatro Clásico de Mérida y del Teatro de la Abadía de Madrid.
El concejal de Cultura sexitano ha subrayado que esta edición supone «un auténtico lujo, que contará con estrenos directos del Festival de Mérida, pensada para que Almuñécar sea un referente cultural en toda Andalucía».
Las obras en cartel
“La Comedia de la Cestilla” (4 de septiembre) – La compañía Arthistrión inaugura el festival con esta pieza de enredo de corte popular, que refleja la tradición cómica grecolatina y conecta con el público desde el humor cotidiano.
“Electra” (5 de septiembre) – Con María León y Elisa Matilla al frente del reparto, esta tragedia de Sófocles estrenada este año en Mérida revive la historia de Electra, quien clama justicia por el asesinato de su padre Agamenón a manos de Clitemnestra y Egisto. Un drama intenso sobre la venganza y el destino.
“Los Hermanos” (6 de septiembre) – El texto de Terencio, recuperado en Mérida en 2025 con Pepón Nieto y Eva Isanta, ofrece una comedia de enredos familiares, equívocos y tensiones entre tradición y modernidad. Una mirada fresca al mundo romano con toques de sátira social.
“Orestiada” (7 de septiembre) – La monumental trilogía de Esquilo, estrenada en el Teatro de la Abadía en 2025, cerrará el festival con su relato sobre el ciclo de violencia en la casa de los Atridas, desde el crimen de Clitemnestra hasta el juicio de Orestes en Atenas. Una reflexión sobre la justicia y el paso de la venganza al derecho.
Con esta programación, Almuñécar se consolida como punto de encuentro del teatro clásico en Andalucía, acercando al público grandes producciones nacionales en un escenario único que rinde homenaje a la tradición grecolatina.

Almuñécar will once again become the capital of classical theatre with the 17th edition of the Greco-Latin Theatre Festival “Sexi Firmum Iulium”, taking place from September 4 to 7 in the town’s historic setting. The program brings together some of the season’s most acclaimed productions, including premieres from the International Classical Theatre Festival of Mérida and Madrid’s Teatro de la Abadía.
The local Councillor for Culture highlighted that this year’s edition represents “a true privilege, featuring direct premieres from the Mérida Festival, designed to make Almuñécar a cultural reference throughout Andalusia.”
The program
“The Comedy of the Basket” (September 4) – The company Arthistrión opens the festival with this popular farce that captures the comic spirit of Greco-Latin theatre, connecting with audiences through everyday humor.
“Electra” (September 5) – Starring María León and Elisa Matilla, this tragedy by Sophocles, premiered this year in Mérida, revisits the story of Electra, who seeks justice for the murder of her father Agamemnon at the hands of Clytemnestra and Aegisthus. An intense drama about vengeance and fate.
“The Brothers” (September 6) – Written by Terence and revived in Mérida in 2025 with Pepón Nieto and Eva Isanta, this comedy explores family conflicts, misunderstandings, and the clash between tradition and modernity. A witty take on Roman society with touches of satire.
“Oresteia” (September 7) – The monumental trilogy by Aeschylus, premiered at Madrid’s Teatro de la Abadía in 2025, will close the festival with its account of the cycle of violence within the House of Atreus, from Clytemnestra’s crime to Orestes’ trial in Athens. A powerful reflection on justice and the shift from vengeance to law.
With this lineup, Almuñécar strengthens its role as a meeting point for classical theatre in Andalusia, offering audiences major national productions in a unique setting that pays tribute to the Greco-Latin tradition.
